Accountancy firms are split into three broad categories, with those offering professional services. These are:

 

  • The ‘Big Four’ firms: Comprising Ernst & Young, PwC, Deloitte and KPMG, the ‘Big Four’ offer all-round advice on their clients’ business problems.

 

  • Large to medium-sized firms: These firms vary greatly with regards to numbers of employees, offices and partners, and have clients ranging from large, well-known companies to independent businesses.

 

  • Small firms: These firms usually provide services to small businesses.

 

In addition to accountancy roles, this programme is the perfect springboard to employment in the following fields:

 

  • Assurance and audit: scrutinising accounting records and business procedures, and checking their accuracy

 

  • Corporate finance: concerned with mergers and acquisitions, fundraising and public/partnerships

 

  • Corporate recovery/insolvency: assisting companies as they seek to recover from financial problems

 

  • Management consultancy: the ‘Big Four’ also offer actuarial, human resources, IT, insurance and pensions services

 

  • Taxation: analysing businesses and implementing appropriate finance restructuring (tax advisory services), and completing and submitting tax returns (tax compliance)

 

  • Forensic accounting: calculating losses arising from thefts, accidents and frauds, as well as providing on mergers and acquisitions disputes
